Clearly, whatever the intent of this research, for some reason Knoll has come to regret it. And it causes an all too familiar pain of her own to surface in her chest. She puts a hand to her breast, balled into a fist.

She wonders if perhaps Grado might be in a similar situation. "It's difficult to keep going sometimes, isn't it?" She turns her head against the stone wall to look back at Knoll.
